Why we need health coaches more than ever?


The past few months have shown us how vulnerable our health and our health systems can be. If there is something, we can personally learn from this experience is the importance of being healthy. Being healthy not only means not being ill, but a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.


When the news about the COVID-19 arrived, I could only think that if I was going to get infected, I needed to make sure that my health was in its best possible shape. Later, when we started to find out that people with preconditions like obesity and diabetes had much higher probabilities of having complications, I couldn’t stop thinking about the importance of prevention and the idea that food is medicine.


One of the biggest problems with our modern health care systems is that they are centered on treating diseases rather than preventing their appearance and treating symptoms rather than finding causes. As health coaches, we can help people prevent and better manage chronic disease by addressing their underlying causes. Changes in diet, physical activity, sleep, and stress management can do wonders!


Of course, there are some diseases and illnesses that cannot be prevented, like a viral infection, but at least the virus can find you with a strong immune system and a body that works well.


Genes play a role in predisposing us to certain diseases like breast cancer, but our health is mostly defined by our environment and our lifestyle choices; i.e. if we live in a very polluted environment and we have a diet high in trans and saturated fats.


If more attention was put into prevention, so much money could be saved from your pocket and from your national health care system. Also, we could alleviate the pressure on our already overwhelmed health care systems.


Health coaches provide guidance that helps you create new, healthy habits, let go of unhealthy behavior, and transform your health goals into reality. Health coaches also help you identify what is preventing you from success and hold you accountable for your health behaviors so that you can achieve your goals.
